In the UAE it is now illegal to wear a Guy Fawkes mask, the iconic symbol of the international hacktivist collective known as Anonymous. The clear implication of the new law is that the UAE government fears the power of the mask, and the Anonymous collective the mask represents.

On November 17, Gulf News reported that government authorities made the Guy Fawkes mask illegal in anticipation of December 2, which is National Day in the UAE. Any person found wearing a Guy Fawkes masks risks being taken into custody for police questioning.

The report cites a Dubai Police official who stressed the negative connotations of the mask, saying:

“Using any symbol that insults the country or instigates unrest against its system is not allowed. We urge citizens to celebrate using other symbols such as national flags, slogans or photos that are more appropriate to the happy occasion of National Day.”

Anonymous, and the Guy Fawkes mask, became a prominent feature of the Arab Spring uprisings. As a result, the mask is now a symbol of rebellion against tyrannical governments and regimes across the region, and across the world.

As of this morning, these two pictures have been popping up all over my feeds, several times I might add. The whole “Boycott Papa John’s!” thing has been around since the CEO first announced that he wasn’t in favor of Obamacare. Now that Obamacare is becoming a reality, you have all these fast food chains that are not in support of Obamacare and will be cutting hours in order to keep from having to pay in the first place. I have to wonder, is anyone REALLY surprised? Or did everyone in favor of Obamacare just assume that business were going to be full fledged supporters of it?

Personally, I think it’s shitty, but that’s the nature of business. A business is there to make money. This goes double if the business is retail and fast food. Both of these are NOTORIOUS for not offering their employees health care benefits unless they’ve worked for the company a number of hours/years or have a consistent number of hours they work every pay period.

Back when I was working for one of the huge retail chains, I was one of the extremely lucky ones to be hired full time with health benefits (that kicked in 6 months later) — which makes me so pissed I had the leave that job years later. Looking for work since then, I have YET to encounter any sort of retail position that has you working full time unless A) It’s management/office work B) You’ve worked for the company long enough to be granted such a “privilege”.

Getting back on track here. So, places that were having their employees work less than full-time hours to avoid giving them healthcare benefits will be cutting their hours moreso to avoid having to pay for Obamacare. In these types of positions, it’s easier to have several people working under 20 hours a week than a staff of fulltimers — which doesn’t make sense IMO, but that’s the way I’ve seen it go.

Shame on these companies that deny their employees healthcare, because now their employees will be forced to pay for Obamacare themselves, reducing their paychecks more-so.

Now you have photos like above encouraging people to boycott these businesses because they refuse to pay for their employees Obamacare. Something about that bothers me. While I don’t agree with where these companies stand, if they were already refusing to offer their employees insurance, why the hell would they offer them Obamacare? Furthermore, if you are going to boycott these companies, aren’t you actually hurting the people working for them more than the companies themselves? Employees who are or will be working shitty hours and scramble to make ends meet will now be in danger of losing their jobs due to cut backs.

If the recession has taught us anything, it’s businesses have learned to work with less employees and now they will learn to work with lesser employees. That is the nature of the beast. Smaller companies that don’t have the big bucks to protect themselves will be the ones that suffer more than the big companies, I promise you this.

Boycotting isn’t the answer. And I certainly don’t trust Obamacare. It’s time to change the way business works from the inside out.

A new initiative is re-energising the Occupy movement. Called the Rolling Jubilee, it is a plan to use money from donations to buy distressed consumer debt from lenders at a marked down price, just as debt collection agencies normally would. But instead of hounding debtors for payments, it will simply cancel the debts. The hope is that the liberated debtors will themselves contribute to the fund, “rolling” the jubilee forward.

The Rolling Jubilee is a genius move for several reasons. First, debt relief is a transpartisan message that eludes conventional political categorisation. As such, it returns Occupy to its origins as an advocate for the wellbeing of ordinary people, neither leftwing nor rightwing. The Rolling Jubilee says, non-threateningly, “We just want to help people in this unfair system.”
